Success In Education Not Necessarily Means Success In Life

Education is a foothold into securing a promising career that will garner us a steady income. There are 20 higher in institutions, 402 private colleges, 111 private universities or university colleges, 34 polytechnics and 94 community colleges. The opinion that having a university education is necessary for a person’s success in life has always been a question to all. According to Article 13 of The United Nations International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights of 1966, 'higher education shall be made equally accessible to all, on the basis of capacity, by every appropriate means, and in particular by the progressive introduction of free education'. With that being said, having a university education is necessary for a person's success in life because it gives us links to big companies, we can gain many soft skills, we can develop our social network and most importantly, many jobs requires us to have a minimum educational level. Soft skills are intangible skills that we learn by personal development trainings and utilize at both work and life. According to Malcolm Gladwell (2011), people who have better soft skills are taking jobs, solving their problems at life in comparison to the people who have less soft skills. We can gain a lot of soft skills when we study in a university. Examples of those soft skills including teamwork, communication skills, critical thinking and time management which we can never learn those skills through a book but from our real life experience in a university.

The soft skills are skills people use to communicate, solve problems, lead, empathize and think creatively. We will face many challenges that just seem impossible at first in our life. Those soft skills help us to approach the problems from new angle and help us think out of the box and at last we can overcome it easily. On the other hand, there are careers that require a specific higher education qualification such as becoming a doctor, psychologist or engineer. Of course, for some simple jobs such as cleaner or truck-driver do not require a university certificate However, education plays a key role in both finding and keeping a job and can open doors to higher-paying, more stimulating and rewarding careers. According to the National Center of Education Statistic (NCES), national unemployment rates are lower for those with higher levels of education attainment, which means that those with a bachelors degree are more likely to be employed than those without a bachelors degree. An investment in knowledge pays the best interest. Earning a degree in a specific field does give you a leg up somebody who may not have the degree. All these show how importance of having a university education to apply for certain jobs. Moreover, having a university education gives us link to big companies. Earning a university certificate is the most common pathway to a better career. Let's face it: if you don't have a degree, you're probably not as valuable to your employer. When push comes to shove it will be much easier to replace you with someone else who only completed high school. This is because employees need more experts in a particular field to help them expand their business or company by giving new and useful ideas. Universities are, and should be, places that uplift society, be it through values, ideas, or solutions for real world problems.

Thus, lecturers in universities have can offer a core of well-pruned knowledge and updated information. We also can’t deny that a high performing lecturer will produce a high quality student when they deliver an effective teaching. In addition, we can build up our social network during our university life. Socialization allows all individuals in a community to develop very similar values, norms, and beliefs. As universities are filled with various kinds of clubs and societies and events, students are able to make as many new friends as possible which will broaden their horizons. Through these contacts, they may be able to know more about their interests and direction in life. Furthermore, it may also help them to understand their field better. In contrast, critics argue that university education only provides theoretical knowledge which might never be used in the working world. This is because they think that that textbooks are outdated and information provided in the particular course doesn’t provide updated information. Still, nobody can deny the importance of theoretical knowledge as it is the basis of practical training, which means that having the right knowledge is crucial as it is said that a little learning is a dangerous thing. As technology is improving, there are also things that we could learn from the lectures, such as learning the skills of using computers, video editing, and many more. I’ll take our university as an example, we do learn video editing and computer skills in Study Skills class which a useful skill that we can use in future.

All those skills could only be learnt from professional lecturers who has the right knowledge to teach us the right method of using it. Besides, materials that are taught in the university might be outdated, but it is also useful to refer to it as we can use the techniques and ideas used as reference. As Nelson Mandela says, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”. This goes to solidify the implication that having a university education is necessary for a person’s success in life as it is no doubt the best choice to having a promising career. However, nobody should neglect the importance of theoretical knowledge as students must have the right knowledge before practicing it in reality. Furthermore, some skills could only be taught through professional lecturers.
